Subject: CABLE OPERATED WINDOW LIFTS Model: 318i (E30) This new system offers considerable advantages in improved window guidance and operating convenience. The central element in the new cable operated window lift mechanism is a steel cable running in a tube. A wire spiral is wound round this cable and highly tensioned, to act as one element in the drive. The gear wheel on the window crank, when turned, engages with this wire spiral and moves the steel cable along inside the tube. A rigid open tube is secured at each of the points where the window glass is guided using two holders attached to the inner sheet metal panel of the door. For the remainder of its length, the tube is closed and is made of high quality polyester plastic material. The holder for side window attachment is linked firmly to the cable. When the window is raised or lowered, the holders slide in the open side of the guide tubes. During window operation, the entire steel cable moves along inside the guide tube. This means that the two window mountings move up or down in parallel, according to the direction of crank rotation. A braking spring in the drive acts as a safeguard against the window slipping back under its own weight or being forced open from the outside. The power windows have a geared electric motor in place of the hand crank drive. To prevent noise and reduce friction, the steel cable is coated with a flocculated polyamide material which requires no maintenance.
